Whale Song historical whaling-stations map (2023)

The Whale Song historical whaling-stations map is an interpretive guide to the whaling geography of Kāpiti and Cook Strait. It can lead readers to individual station histories, but its markers must be read alongside documentary and archaeological evidence rather than treated as a complete census of every station ever occupied.

Why station numbers vary

Nigel Prickett’s archaeological study quotes contemporary snapshots: six stations in 1839, two in 1844 and two in 1847. The figures describe different dates and sources; they do not establish that only six stations existed throughout the whole whaling period.
