Wai 2200 findings
Waitangi Tribunal findings document significant Te Ātiawa/Ngāti Awa land and resource losses; modern island and district history cannot be told solely as a conservation success.
The historical record
The Waitangi Tribunal’s Wai 2200 inquiry addresses the historical experience of the Porirua ki Manawatū district, within which Kāpiti and its communities sit. Land, customary interests, relationships and nineteenth-century change are part of that wider history.

Why a claims report needs its own context
The Kāpiti district’s nineteenth-century history involved major changes in settlement, trade, landholding and political authority. The existence of early European stations or later Crown conservation purchases does not, by itself, settle questions of customary interests or the history of land transactions. Nor should a generic account of the district be substituted for the evidence presented by claimants.
