Puketapu ki Paraparaumu: published history and mana whenua
Puketapu ki Paraparaumu Hapū’s public history, published by Te Kāhui Mahi, describes the ancestral and settlement connections that underpin its continuing relationship with Paraparaumu. It identifies Te Uruhi and the Tikotu–Wharemaukū landscape and records the Trust’s establishment in 2021. The published account states the commitment to uphold mana whenua and mana moana. This is the hapū’s account and should be attributed as such.
The Kāpiti Coast District Council heritage account independently describes the early-1830s Te Uruhi pā, flax and food trade with whalers, and subsequent movements and land use. The accounts should be read together, without treating a council summary as a replacement for the hapū’s own voice.
The historical record
Puketapu ki Paraparaumu Hapū is part of Te Ātiawa history in the Kāpiti district. The hapū’s account records migrations from Taranaki and the establishment of communities around Te Uruhi, Wharemaukū and other places in Paraparaumu.
