Images worth producing next
Rather than create imaginary portraits of named people or fictitious ship logs, develop transparent explanatory visuals:
- 1837 Kāpiti shipping: Historical nautical chart with dated shipping notices transcribed beside it. Reproduction/annotated facsimile, not fabricated logbook. Obtain source scan, catalogue reference and permissions.
- Long Point station, 1840–42: Diagram of shore station workflow: lookout, boats, landing, flensing, tryworks, storage, shipment. Clearly labelled interpretive diagram. Ground layout in archaeology; do not pretend exact reconstruction.
- Waiorua production, 1844–47: Oil, bone, boats and labour plotted on separate correctly labelled scales. Data visualization. Recheck Prickett table and underlying returns.
- Puketapu whenua and waterways: Historical geography of Te Uruhi, Wharemaukū, wetland connections. Hapū-reviewed interpretive map. Approval before locating sensitive places or pā.
- Vessel profiles: Silhouettes of barque, schooner and whaleboat; vessel-specific type only when sourced. Generic educational diagram. Avoid implying a silhouette is an identified ship.
- Whaling economy: Flowchart of oil, baleen, supplies, payments, shipping and markets. Evidence-based explanatory diagram. Separate established links from hypothetical links.
- Crew and station workers: Role diagram for headsman, boatsteerer, pulling hands, cooper, carpenter, tonguer. Generic educational illustration. Do not assign ethnicities or names without evidence.
- Primary-source reading: Side-by-side original excerpt and exact transcription with citation. Document reproduction. Copyright and transcription verification.
