The historical record
Whale Song hosted Prickett PDF — Whale Song website, hosted copy of The Archaeology of New Zealand Shore Whaling — A searchable hosted copy includes the Kāpiti whaling station location map (figure 68), and summarises the 1839 six stations/23 boats/466 tuns and subsequent decline.
The document behind the station stories
The Archaeology of New Zealand Shore Whaling by Nigel Prickett (2002) is one of WhaleLIBRARY’s foundational research works. Its Kāpiti chapter, pp.83–97, brings together station locations, nineteenth-century testimony, historical returns and surviving archaeological remains. Figure 68 maps the whaling station locations discussed in the regional chapter.
Follow the evidence into the landscape
The report describes sites from Korohiwa and Paremata to Motungarara, Long Point and Waiorua. At Long Point, Fraser’s accounts give 44 tuns of oil in 1840 and 172 tuns in 1841 before a much smaller 1842 return of seven tuns. These are especially valuable because they document change at one station across successive seasons. Source: Prickett (2002), pp.83–97, drawing on Fraser’s accounts.
