A volume from the WhaleLIBRARY

History of Kāpiti Island

Kāpiti Island was linked to the mainland, Mana and the northern South Island by waka, shipping, trade and the movements of communities. Nineteenth-century shore whaling added industrial workplaces to this older network of coastal relationships. The island’s history therefore cannot be told solely through the activities of visiting whalers.

The stations changed over time

Tokomapuna was the leading producer in 1839, Long Point in 1841 and Waiorua thereafter, according to Prickett’s reconstruction. Fraser’s Long Point accounts record 44 tuns of oil in 1840, 172 in 1841 and only seven in 1842. The sharp variation gives a more vivid sense of the changing economy than a single regional total.
